Why we built Casa

Reflections on a year building Casa and our mission clarified.

I don’t own a home yet.

For a while, that made writing about Casa feel a little strange. We’re building for homeowners, and I’m not one. But the longer we’ve worked on this, the more I’ve realized that my relationship to the problem is not abstract.

I’ve watched my parents deal with the endless background stress of maintaining a house. I’ve talked to friends+family homeowners who are trying to understand whether a repair is urgent, whether a quote is fair, or whether they can safely do something themselves. And through our early Casa work with homeowners, I’ve personally seen how painful it can be to get even a simple home project booked.

The pattern is always the same: homeowners are expected to make expensive decisions about systems they were never taught to understand.

2. Homeownership Is Full of Asymmetry

The scariest part of owning a home is the unknown: expensive projects that show up quickly and drain your savings account. These are things like the leaking bathtub that collapses a ceiling, or the freak hailstorm that puts your aging roof out of commission for the last time.

While these things are not always preventable, they are preventable more often than not. Small issues often turn into big problems over a long period of time, and fixing that small issue a year ago could save you thousands of dollars today.

But that is easier said than done.

Historically, the vast knowledge gap between professionals and the average Jane or Joe has created a real informational asymmetry. Seasoned professionals with 20 years of experience bring a high level of expertise across industries like plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and contracting that keep us safe and our homes in great condition.

By contrast, the average homeowner probably has a couple of half-baked projects under their belt and a saved playlist of unwatched YouTube videos.

Our observation is that these two groups are speaking completely different languages — not in a Google Translate way, but in a “can you make the sound your car is making with your mouth?” kind of way.

Sometimes this type of issue can be sorted out. But sometimes it creates a bigger problem. It’s a lose-lose situation when a communication breakdown between a professional and a customer results in wasted time, effort, and money.

As a customer, it can be a bit of a head-scratcher to hear “the water heater has a bad anode rod” instead of a simpler explanation like “a piece in the water heater that prevents corrosion is failing.” Similarly, it’s not obvious how serious that problem is, or what the options are.

Is this something that could flood the house, or is this actually not a huge deal?

On the professional’s side, an incomplete picture from the customer can quickly lead to wasted time and dissatisfaction. When asked even basic questions like “When did you install this water heater?”, most customers will shrug their shoulders, and the professional often has to make a recommendation that lacks nuance and specificity.

Most professionals are trying to do good work. But the system around home maintenance still leaves homeowners with less information, fewer options, and less leverage than the person selling the service.

That is the gap Casa is built to close.

3. AI Is Arriving, But Not Necessarily for the Homeowner

Since the dawn of ChatGPT, dozens of AI-powered SaaS businesses have launched to support the professional service industry.

Many of these products focus on helping plumbers, electricians, HVAC companies, and other specialists run their businesses more efficiently. They offer solutions like:

  • Automated outreach to past customers
  • Voice AI to schedule inbound customers
  • Tracking software to improve lead conversion

There is nothing inherently wrong with helping these businesses operate better. In fact, better-run home service businesses can be good for everyone.

But in this SaaS arms race, the end user has been overlooked.

The unnecessary receptionist upsells and the outbound “personalized” texts and calls offering me “must-have” services for 10% off aren’t new. But with AI, these frustrating practices are becoming cheaper, easier, and more scalable.

There’s no doubt that we’re in the opening innings of AI moving into these businesses, and the experience could change. But today, a lot of the business upside comes at the homeowner’s expense.

Even though homeowners hire pros to be their experts, they will always have the awareness that their objectives — best price, best service, least headache — do not always perfectly align with a business’s objectives: selling more services at higher prices.

That tension has always existed. AI just makes it more important that homeowners have powerful tools of their own.

We think it’s time that homeowners had some help around the home that is actually on their side.

For that reason, we’re building Casa: purpose-built AI that works for the American homeowner to painlessly and effortlessly handle homeownership on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis.

4. What We Believe Homeowners Deserve

Focused on the home maintenance space, we’re building around a few non-negotiables for our users.

First, homeowners deserve to understand what is going on in their own homes without becoming experts in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, appliances, and every other trade all at once.

They deserve a patient listener that can help uncover the root of an issue, explain what might be happening, and give them the confidence to book the service they actually need.

Second, homeowners deserve better ways to communicate with skilled professionals.

By providing a “translator” for the customer and well-packaged information to professionals, we can prevent communication breakdowns and unhappy customers. Consumers deserve an advocate on their side to ensure that they’re getting the best quality of service, and professionals deserve the full picture to deliver the best quality of service possible.

Third, homeowners deserve real price discovery.

Getting in contact with pros is a surprisingly challenging experience. Sourcing local pros, analyzing their ratings and reliability, contacting them, managing scheduling, and comparing quotes can take hours. And even then, many homeowners are left wondering whether they got a fair price.

Fourth, homeowners deserve maintenance that feels predictable instead of mysterious.

Casa should act as an always-on “brain” for your home: remembering issues that arise, organizing routine maintenance, and helping you stay ahead of small problems before they become expensive surprises.

Finally, homeowners deserve to know when they can safely do something themselves.

Many projects require a professional. But there are plenty that can be done by nearly anyone with the right context, the right tools, and an infinitely patient tutor walking them through it.

The goal is simple: help homeowners feel less overwhelmed, less alone, and more in control of the place they live.

5. How Casa Helps

Casa helps homeowners in four main ways: clarity, advocacy, predictability, and affordability.

Clarity: eliminate the information gap

Casa eliminates the information gap and builds consumer confidence.

Skilled professionals and non-expert homeowners deserve better ways to communicate. By offering a patient listener to homeowners, we uncover the root of the issue and give them the confidence to book the service they need.

Casa helps users confidently diagnose issues and understand their options, while giving professionals an easy place to start and the necessary information upfront.

Instead of hearing “the water heater has a bad anode rod” and wondering what that means, Casa can explain the issue in plain language, help you understand how serious it is, and make the next step feel less intimidating.

Advocacy: seek the best price

Rolling out Casa’s alpha version, we quickly confirmed one of our core hypotheses: getting in contact with pros is a surprisingly challenging experience.

One of our NYC-based customers needed a new dishwasher installed. Out of around 10 NYC-based plumbers we sourced:

  • Only 2 answered the phone or responded
  • Of the 2 that answered, only 1 was able to provide a quote for the job

Similarly, one of our Maryland-based customers needed a garage door opener fixed. Out of around 10 Maryland-based garage door techs we sourced:

  • Only 2 answered the phone

This trend isn’t an outlier. That reach rate is pretty consistent with pro bookings across our platform so far.

Luckily, the difficulty of finding a pro has a natural enemy: the tenacity and relentlessness of AI agents.

What may have taken you a few hours to do in the past — source local pros, analyze their ratings and reliability, contact them, manage scheduling — is now something Casa can help handle on your behalf.

Using informed and robust AI, Casa seeks the best price for the right job, advocating for you the entire time.

Predictability: make home maintenance manageable

Casa keeps your home maintenance predictable and under control by remembering issues that arise and acting as an always-on detective for you.

As new issues come up, Casa digs to the root of the issue on your behalf, helping you stay on track. And of course, Casa organizes and schedules the most important weekly, monthly, and seasonal maintenance tasks so you can keep your house in prime shape through the seasons.

Spending a small amount of time doing routine checks on your air filters, appliances, or other areas can prevent huge unexpected expenses that derail your finances and threaten your biggest investment.

Sleep peacefully knowing that you don’t have to remember every quirk the last owner mentioned in the home inspection report.

Let Casa do the work.

Affordability: know when to DIY and when to hire a pro

Many homeowners struggle with the decision of whether they should attempt a home project themselves or hire a pro instead.

We believe that regardless of the final decision, everyone deserves a thorough breakdown of the tradeoffs, the difficulty, and the budget for each option.

Casa makes that possible by making it clear:

  • Whether the project is something we’d recommend you do based on safety, skill level, and level of effort
  • How much you’d expect to spend on the DIY option
  • How much, on average, you’d expect to spend by hiring a pro

While many projects require a professional, we also believe there are plenty that can be done by nearly anyone with the right context.

Pairing custom-tailored instructions for your bathroom, your water heater, or your kitchen with an infinitely patient tutor gives you the opportunity to learn and save money by doing fixes yourself.

Over time, you become handier, more confident, and better equipped to care for your home.

6. A Necessary Counterbalance

Despite the incredible investment in AI for the home services and home maintenance markets, it’s clear to us that the homeowner is being neglected.

As new tools make service businesses faster, smarter, and more efficient, homeowners need equally powerful tools working on their behalf.

That does not mean replacing professionals. It means helping homeowners become better prepared, better informed, and better able to work with the right professionals when they need them.

Casa exists because homeowners deserve an advocate.

They deserve to know what is happening in their home. They deserve to understand their options. They deserve to get fair prices without spending their weekends chasing down quotes. They deserve to prevent expensive surprises before they happen. And they deserve to feel capable of handling the small projects that make a house feel like their own.

Now is the right time for a purposeful product that puts all of this together.

Homeowners deserve simple and intentional software to care for their greatest asset affordably and comfortably.

That’s why we’re building Casa.
